How to Check Refunds Status for Cancelled Trains & Tickets

There are times when the trains may get cancelled owing to bad weather or strikes. There can be many other reasons as well for the cancellation of the trains. If you had plans to travel and if you suddenly come across the cancelled train then the first thing that you need to do is that you need to go ahead and look for an alternative travel plan.

Refund if the Train is cancelled

Once you are done with the alternative travel plan then you can think about the refund and let us tell you that you do not have to be worried about the refund as in case of cancellation of the train, the full refund is made irrespective of the condition.

Refund in Case of Cancellation of Tickets

Apart from this, you must know that if you cancel the ticket owing to the personal reasons then a certain charge will be deducted as the cancellation fee. This charge depends on multiple factors. These factors include the type of ticket quota, type of class and the time before the journey. In case, you have a Tatkal or Premium Tatkal ticket then you need to brace for the impact as there is no refund in such a case.

Refund Mode

If the ticket was booked via IRCTC Next Generation Portal via then the refund will be credited back to the mode of the payment that you used to make the payment of the ticket. In addition to this, the refund process is much quicker if you used IRCTC e-Wallet. The refund process takes just 1 day in such a case but it can take longer in case of the debit card, credit card or net banking. The usual time is 4 to 7 working days.

If in case you booked a counter ticket then you must know that you can cancel the ticket online via IRCTC Next Generation Portal but you still need to visit the reservation counter to get the refund. In addition to this, instead of cancelling the ticket online, you can also cancel the counter ticket by directly visiting the counter. You also have that option.

Refunds Status

You can check the refund status if you have IRCTC Login ID. Here is the process to check the refund status

  • Visit the IRCTC Portal and login to the IRCTC Portal using your IRCTC Next Generation Login
  • On the portal, you can visit My Account Section and then go to My Transactions. From the list of options displayed, click on Ticket Refund History. You will be taken to a new page where the tickets will be displayed for all categories
  • Select the ticket for which you would like to check the refund status. The refund status will now be displayed.
